July 2, 2006, the children and staff participated in a memorial ceremony celebrating the life of Ben Pawlewicz and the coming of water to Kisa School. The simple program opened with “Jesu, Man’s Desiring” played by Llwanga on the newly arrived piano. Ten children and five adults made short speeches about the occasion. Water was distributed to each child.
Unable to drill for water on the grounds of the school, the school community purchased and helped to install four reservoir tanks strategically placed next to buildings to capture about 60% of the rainwater. The 10,000 liter tanks are interconnected so that the rainwater flows equally to all of the tanks.
At present all the tanks are full. Tanks fill during the rainy season (December to April) and during sporadic rain storms in the dry season. It is anticipated that the storage capacity of the tanks will carry the school throughout the year. For the first time, Kisa School has clean, safe, consistent supply of water for its school community of about 1,000 people.

Benedict Alexander Pawlewicz, more recently known as Tyler Takimoto, died Tuesday, December 27, 2005, in Seattle, Washington, USA. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made for a memorial well to be drilled at Kisa School in Nansana. Donations may be sent to the nonprofit foundation L’una-cef, 6201 Leesburg Pike, Suite 405 Falls Church, VA 22044 Although he was only 18, Ben had a great concern for social justice and for other people. He would enjoy the knowledge that loved ones celebrated his life with something that significantly improved the lives of others. |
Background: Kisa School, Nansana, stands on two acres of land and has grown to include 500 students ages 3 to 14, 20 teachers, 10 assistants as well as 6 other adults who help on a daily basis. From day one water has been problematic. Initally two men hauled water in pails by bicycle to the school. As the school grew, a water pipe was installed to bring water from a distance. However, no water flowed for 9 months. When water does flow, a nearby chieftain claims payment. At the moment, water is being hauled over one mile from a nearby river. Water is also collected from the roof drains during the rainy season. To ensure a consistent, secure water supply for the children, we need to drill a well within the school compound. It is estimated that drilling equipment and pump will cost a minimum of $10,000. The villagers will supply labor. |
